How Packet Firewall (PF) Can Protect Your Enterprise – By Jason Miller, Thumbtack
Server and endpoint security comes in all flavors, but controlling network traffic is another strategy to enhance computer security. Starting with OS X 10.9, the packet firewall (PF) provides sysadmins the ability to manage what enters and exits a computing device. What you let in and out of the door may save you the headache of having to rebuild a system. PF can provide you with another layer of security for your enterprise infrastructure.
Jason prides himself on his organizational and leadership skills as well as his ability to manage and uphold policy. He specifically looks to provide quality IT solutions in a preventative and proactive way to increase everyone’s productivity. At Thumbtack, he not only performs assessments, but acquires and deploys infrastructure to meet the requirements — including the integration of different departments and special task applications. Jason actively troubleshoots client systems; installs, configures, and maintains workgroup servers; provides support and direction for using Lab institutional services; and trains and mentors interns, new employees and other support staff.
Jason is also a Board Member of Macbrained. Macbrained is a Mac and iOS-focused community for developers, engineers and administrators-alike. Through collaboration and education we help grow Mac and iOS in the Enterprise and in Education by sharing our personal experiences in supporting and managing the platforms.

Open File Limits on OS X – By Topher Nadauld, University of Utah, Marriott Library ITS
This presentation will cover open file limits on OS X, including what are they, why do they need to be increased, and options on increasing them. In Unix the kernel opens files places them in order to find them when needed called file descriptors. The OS naturally limits the amount that you can open. By increasing the number of file descriptors allows you to open additional files without getting errors messages like “too many files open”. This occurs due to open file limits imposed by the OS X operating system. Depending on the version of OS X, the method for increasing the open file limits is different. For OS X Yosemite and later, we discuss options to increase the open file limits to help resolve issues with processes or scripts.
