Efficient Apple Deployment Workflows for Technology Lending Libraries and Beyond – Kevin Dunn, Apple

Join us for an in-depth session with Kevin Dunn, a Mac Solutions Architect, as he explores powerful workflows tailored for technology lending libraries and beyond. In today’s fast-paced environments, institutions and organizations often face the challenge of rapidly deploying Apple devices to users with temporary technology needs, such as in lending libraries, conference setups, or educational labs. Kevin will demonstrate streamlined techniques for quickly preparing Apple devices—such as Macs, iPads, and Apple TVs—for users, ensuring a smooth and efficient process for both deployment and reset.

This presentation will focus on practical, time-saving strategies that allow you to wipe, configure, and re-deploy devices in a matter of minutes—making them ready for the next user with minimal downtime. Kevin will walk through real-world examples, showing how these workflows can not only enhance the management of temporary-use devices but also improve the efficiency of more permanent deployments in office environments or educational settings. Additionally, Kevin will highlight key Apple features and management tools that optimize the deployment process, such as automated setup, provisioning, and system resets. You’ll discover how these workflows can ensure consistent device performance while reducing manual effort, freeing up valuable time for your IT team. Whether you’re managing a fleet of Apple devices in a lending library or handling permanent assignments in your organization, these techniques can help streamline your operations and improve device lifecycle management.

awk, sed, and grep — Together we can change anything! – William Smith, Jamf

For MacAdmins, the ability to manipulate text efficiently is crucial when managing configurations, parsing logs, or automating repetitive tasks. Enter the candidates of change: awk, sed, and grep. These command-line workhorses transform raw text into useful, actionable data that can drive your workflows. Whether you’re extracting key information from system logs or filtering through command outputs, these tools give you the precision needed for effective Mac system administration.

In this session, William Smith will take you on a deep dive into the powerful combination of awk, sed, and grep. You’ll see practical examples, including extracting battery cycle counts using macOS’s ioreg command and refine that data through smart filtering. He will also walk through how these tools can be used together to create efficient workflows, demonstrating how you can turn cluttered data into just what you need—quickly and easily. But it’s not just about efficiency; he will emphasize how modern hardware has evolved, making processor power less of a concern. Instead, the real focus should be on simplicity and minimizing failure points in your scripts. Every extra command introduces complexity and potential troubleshooting challenges. Reducing that complexity is key to writing robust, maintainable scripts.
