The Software Lifecycle Whisperer Presentation

The Software Lifecycle Whisperer Presentation

At the University of Utah IT Rendezvous conference, I had an opportunity to presenting on a practical and increasingly important challenge for IT teams: automating software installation and updates on macOS devices. My session focused on Installomator, an open‑source tool that streamlines the deployment and maintenance of applications across managed Macs.

I walked attendees through the common pain points of manual software management—time‑consuming updates, inconsistent versions across devices, and the security risks of outdated applications. From there, I demonstrated how Installomator can simplify the process by providing a library of scripts that automatically fetch, install, and update a wide range of macOS applications. This approach not only reduces administrative overhead but also ensures end users stay current with minimal disruption.

The presentation included real‑world examples of how Installomator can be integrated into existing management workflows, such as Jamf Pro or other MDM solutions. I also shared lessons learned from deploying it in production environments, highlighting best practices for testing, version control, and user communication.

The session was recorded, but unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, the presentation video was lost. However, if there’s any interest, I’d be more than happy to give another presentation on this topic at the University of Utah’s monthly campus MacAdmins or another meeting. Please let me know if you’re interested.
