The University of Utah MacAdmins Meeting is held virtually monthly on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 11 AM Mountain Time. Presentations cover Apple technology and integration in a heterogeneous university enterprise environment. This month’s meeting will be held on Wed, September 16th, 2026, at 11 AM MT virtually using Zoom. Live broadcasts and archives are available to the MacAdmin community 2-3 days post-meeting.
Rosetta’s Retirement Party: How to Prepare– Adam Selby, Workbrew
Rosetta 2 made Apple’s transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon remarkably smooth—perhaps so smooth that some Intel dependencies remain hidden in our environments. Rosetta is a temporary translation technology, however, and was never intended to replace native Apple Silicon software permanently. Full Rosetta support will continue through macOS 27 Golden Gate, but beginning with macOS 28, its functionality will be limited to certain older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks.
This session will examine how macOS Golden Gate handles Intel applications and how Apple guides customers through major technology deprecations. We’ll look at Rosetta usage notifications and the tools MacAdmins can use to identify Intel-only software across their fleets. The discussion will extend beyond obvious applications to less-visible dependencies, including plug-ins, extensions, command-line tools, installer scripts, launch agents and daemons, authentication components, printer drivers, virtual audio and camera devices, and software configured to “Open using Rosetta.”
Attendees will learn how to combine application inventory, usage data, architectural checks, and real-world testing to distinguish genuine dependencies from unused Intel code. We’ll also discuss how to prioritize frequently used and business-critical software, evaluate vendor readiness, update internal packages and workflows, communicate changes to users, and build a practical remediation plan before general-purpose Rosetta support ends.

In this session, Arek Dreyer will examine the gap between the Mac admin community’s expectations for Platform SSO and what it delivers in practice. He will explore its successes, limitations, and new macOS 27 capabilities while identifying the challenges that remain.
Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of Platform SSO’s current state, where it provides meaningful value, and what Mac administrators should consider when evaluating or expanding a deployment.
